正如西方殖民国家称呼他们曾征服的殖民地区为“热带”，“南方”和“第三世界”，热带地区也相对应地称呼这些强大的资本主义国家为自己眼中的“西方世界”，尽管西方国家真正的地理方位并不在其西边，而是在偏北边。但对这些处于世界体系边缘的热带前殖民地地区来说，真实的地理向量已然不重要，那个“西方世界”才是他们不得不注视的方向，即使那段历史已经过去。强大的，规训的力量仍继续从“西方”吹来。

Just as the western colonizers called the colonies they conquered "the tropics," "the South," and "the Third World," so the tropics called the powerful capitalist countries "the Western world," even though the real geographical position of the Western countries was not to the west, but to the north. But for these former tropical colonies on the edge of the world system, the real geographical vector is no longer important, and that "Western world" is where they have to look -- even if that history is past. Powerful, disciplined forces continue to blow from the “West".
